Since 2021, The Portfolio Group has held the number one position on Trustpilot across HR & Recruitment and four of its subcategories: Recruiter, Recruitment, Temp Agency, and Talent Agency, plus Employment Search Service under the Employment and Career category.
Keeping that spot for this length of time, in a market this competitive, is something we are genuinely grateful for, and we want to talk openly about how we got here.
The proof sits in the numbers.
We have received over 3,000 reviews – and counting – and have maintained a rating of 5 out of 5 stars, a standard we work to uphold every single day. You can read every one of those reviews for yourself on our Trustpilot profile.
We are not sharing this to boast. We want to set out the practices that genuinely earn the trust of clients and candidates considering using our services, and to answer a question we are often asked: what does it actually take to be the best recruitment agency?
Communication is our greatest strength
Reliable communication sits at the heart of everything we do. The simplest example is the one we hold ourselves to most strictly – calling when we say we will call.
It sounds like a small thing, but keeping that promise builds confidence on both sides of the process, and confidence is what every good placement is built on.
We take the time to get to know each client and each candidate as an individual. We listen first, learning what a business really needs from a hire and what a candidate truly wants from their next move.
By understanding each person’s motivations early on, we can match the right people to the right roles rather than simply pushing CVs across a desk.
Specialist knowledge, speed, and the quality of our shortlists
Our depth of focus is what makes the difference. We recruit across four specialist divisions – Payroll, Credit Control, Procurement, and HR & Reward – backed by more than 35 years in the industry since our founding in 1988.
That long track record means we are established in the sectors we recruit at every level of the market, right across the UK. We have even supported some individuals throughout their whole profession; as they move between being our candidate and our client.
This niche knowledge allows us move quickly. Our consultants know experienced professionals in the markets they serve, so they can build fast, high-quality shortlists of pre-qualified candidates and save clients the slow, draining work of searching alone. A strong shortlist is not about volume; it is about presenting the right few people who genuinely fit the brief.
Sticking to our processes and keeping our promises is what turns a good service into a great one, and it is exactly what our reviews reflect.
Relationships that last beyond the placement
Our work does not end the moment a placement is made.
We stay in touch with both the employer and the new employee, checking that each side is happy and settled in. We see that follow-up as our duty, not an optional extra, and it is often where long-term relationships are won.
It is the same thinking that leads us to openly invite clients and candidates to rate us on Trustpilot. Honest feedback, good or bad, shows us where we are getting it right and where we can do better, and it keeps our service sharp as the needs of the industry shift.
Trustpilot publishes its own transparency report on how reviews are verified, which is part of why open, public feedback means so much to us.
So, what does it take to reach number one and stay there? For us, the answer comes down to a handful of simple principles: clear communication, treating every person as an individual, deep specialist knowledge, and a real commitment to best practice on every single placement.
