Are you an experienced payroll professional who thrives on solving complex technical challenges rather than just processing data? Do you enjoy moving away from rigid factory-style processing to offer a genuinely consultative service to your clients?

Portfolio are proud to be working with a progressive, forward-thinking Chartered Accountancy firm looking for a technically strong and relationship-driven Payroll Senior to manage a diverse portfolio of clients.

Unlike traditional processing bureaus, their focus is on payroll technical excellence and tailored client advisory. Lookong beyond the numbers to provide strategic insights, ensuring their clients receive a premium, proactive service. Believe in autonomy, professional development, and building deep, lasting partnerships with the businesses we support.

      The Role

As a Payroll Senior, you will take full ownership of your own client portfolio, acting as their trusted, go-to expert. Your key responsibilities will include:

      • Managing accurate, compliant end-to-end payroll processing (weekly, monthly, and four-weekly) for a varied portfolio of clients.
      • Acting as a technical consultant to advise clients on complex payroll matters, including HMRC regulations, automatic enrolment, statutory payments (SSP, SMP, SPP), benefits, and termination calculations.
      • Building strong, direct relationships with your clients through regular communication, understanding their business needs, and resolving queries proactively.
      • Keeping up to date with evolving legislative changes, ensuring absolute compliance, and supporting junior team members with technical escalations.
      • Completing all statutory year-end processes, P60s, and providing tailored management reports to clients as required.

      What They Are Looking For

      • Proven experience managing a multi-frequency client portfolio within a practice or fast-paced payroll bureau environment.
      • Deep knowledge of UK payroll legislation, auto-enrolment rules, and complex calculations. A CIPP qualification is highly desirable but not essential if backed by strong practical experience.
      • An individual who enjoys interpreting data, communicating complex rules clearly to non-payroll professionals, and adding real advisory value.
      • Strong IT skills, ideally with experience using major payroll software (e.g Iris Payroll Profession) and excellent MS Excel capabilities.

      What They Offer

      • Competitive salary and clear path for career progression.
      • Flexible and hybrid working options to support a genuine work-life balance.
      • Comprehensive benefits package, including study support for further professional qualifications (CIPP).
      • A collaborative, supportive, and technically stimulating team environment.
