Portfolio are proud to be supporting a major retail organisation in recruiting a Payroll Specialist to join their in‑house payroll team. This is a role for someone who enjoys being close to the detail, takes real ownership of their work, and thrives in a collaborative environment where payroll is seen as a critical business function.
You’ll be part of a supportive team that values accuracy, communication, and strong technical expertise. If you like being the person people rely on, the one who knows the legislation, understands the systems, and can confidently resolve complex queries then this will feel like a great fit.
What you’ll be responsible for
- End‑to‑end payroll processing for a large, diverse workforce
- Managing statutory requirements
- Handling complex payroll queries
- Supporting payroll reconciliations
- Maintaining and updating payroll systems
- Working closely with HR, Finance, and operational teams
- Identifying opportunities to streamline processes

- Strong technical payroll knowledge – someone who understands legislation, calculations, and compliance inside out.
- A hands‑on approach with confidence managing detailed, high‑volume payroll activity.
- A sense of accountability
- Collaborative mindset and able to communicate well, build relationships easily, and enjoy working with teams across the business.
- Problem‑solving ability – spot issues early, and resolve them with clarity and confidence.
- A calm, organised approach in a fast‑paced environment where accuracy really matters
