Portfolio Payroll is partnering with a highly respected UK university with an excellent reputation for innovation, inclusivity and professional development. Due to continued growth and internal projects, they are looking to appoint a Payroll Specialist on a permanent basis to support their busy payroll function.
The Role
As a Payroll Specialist, you will play a key role in ensuring the accurate and timely processing of payroll for a large and diverse workforce, including academic staff, professional services, researchers and casual workers. You’ll support the end‑to‑end payroll cycle and contribute to ongoing improvements within the Oracle HR/payroll system.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Updating payroll records with new starters, leavers and contractual changes
- Processing variable pay including overtime, allowances, shift enhancements and casual hours
- Completing manual statutory calculations (SSP, SMP, SPP, SAP etc.)
- Assisting with monthly payroll checks, reconciliations and reporting
- Supporting HMRC compliance, including PAYE, NI and RTI submissions
- Handling pension administration and auto‑enrolment processes (LGPS, TPS, USS or similar)
- Maintaining accurate data within the Oracle HR/payroll system
- Providing a friendly, professional payroll service to employees and university departments
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Previous experience in payroll processing within a large or complex organisation
- Strong understanding of HMRC legislation, tax, NI and statutory payments
- Experience with auto‑enrolment and pension administration
- Confident with manual calculations and high‑volume variable pay
- Excellent communication skills
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Experience using Oracle
- Payroll qualifications (desirable but not essential)
