National Payroll Week is the perfect moment to say something payroll people rarely say out loud: this deserves to be a profession of choice, and everyone working in it has a part to play in raising its profile.

As Headline Sponsor, we want to hand you some practical ways to do exactly that.

You already know payroll isn’t “pressing a button” – but plenty of people outside the profession still think that. It touches legislation, data, systems and people’s real lives – every payslip is someone’s rent, their childcare, their peace of mind. Anytime the button myth is mentioned, correct it!

There has never been a stronger case for the job, either. Payroll salaries are competitive, the work is recession-proof, and the variety is wider than it used to be, now running into systems, software and tech for anyone who wants that route. If you enjoy talking to people, it suits you too. Our Payroll Salary Guide backs the pay point up with real figures, so you can speak about it with confidence.

Talk about Payroll and open young people’s eyes to it

Most people fall into payroll by accident, simply because the kids in your life have never heard it offered as an option. If a teenager enjoys maths, likes being methodical, or wants a job where they’re genuinely helping people, payroll deserves to be in that conversation – most just don’t know it exists as a path. Talk about the profession with family and friends – your own kids, nieces and nephews – who are thinking about what comes next. Be the reason someone falls into it on purpose.

Get into a school careers day, too. Advisors are crying out for people who can explain the job – payroll rarely makes the list next to doctor or firefighter, so put it there yourself. Champion open doors as well: ask your employer to approve a “bring your kid to work day,” and encourage the business to take on a Year 10 placement. A single week in payroll can change how someone sees a whole career.

Share your experience and champion the profession publicly

Your story carries weight, so share it. Post a day in the life on LinkedIn, Instagram or TikTok – the algorithm reaches people your careers advisor never will.

During NPW2026, enter the CIPP competition too: share your story on “Why I #ChoosePayroll” to be entered into their prize draw.

Go a step further and speak for the profession itself, not only your employer – a LinkedIn article, a guest slot on a payroll podcast, or a talk at an event does more for payroll’s standing than any single company’s marketing ever will.

Nominate a colleague. Payroll teams are famously poor at putting themselves forward, so back someone for a CIPP Annual Excellence Award, an industry list or an internal recognition scheme.

Use National Payroll Week to amplify all of this – say a public thank you to your team, colleagues or manager, and give the profession the recognition it deserves. National Payroll Week gives you a ready-made platform to do exactly that.

Bring people through and raise Payroll’s status from within

Growth comes from the people you help along the way. Mentor someone new – a graduate, a career-changer or a first-time hire – and be the person they can ask the “stupid questions” without fear. Most people who stay in payroll point to one person who made the early days easier.

Support colleagues studying for their CIPP qualification with study time, revision resources or simply a friendly sounding board. Keeping that pipeline moving keeps the whole profession strong.

Make room for ongoing training too, not just qualifications – payroll changes fast, and staying current with legislation and industry developments should be treated as part of the job, not something squeezed in around it.

The same goes for networking: encourage attendance at industry events, and don’t limit that to payroll-specific ones. Finance and HR events can be just as valuable, helping build stronger ties with the sectors payroll works alongside every day.

Payroll has never had a stronger story to tell. This National Payroll Week, make sure you’re one of the people telling it.
